roermond

Roermond train station

Near the beginning of the semester, we took a short trip down to the town of Roermond in Netherlands. Tomorrow, we are going there again but here are some old photos from the place!

Roermond is a picturesque town, similar to Maastricht but smaller and less well-known. It is only half an hour away by train from Maastricht, so it is pretty accessible. They have the same architectural style, cobblestoned streets and cathedrals.

We passed by a medieval-theme funfair held in an old church courtyard, with monks and knights in full costume gear. Even the little children were dressed up which was really cute! It cost money to go in so being stingy, we didn't; but we took a peek through the iron bars - here they are playing some traditional weighing game, it consists of a huge wooden beam with a scale. A child stands on one side and the priest "weighs" her by balancing the other end with metal weights.

Our main purpose of going to Roermond was actually for the designer discount village! This was a mini-discount outlet area, with different designer stores inside at factory outlet prices. There was Burberry, Fossil, Fred Perry (which Kenneth was especially enthusiastic about), Nike, Adidas... just for shopaholics

The concept of letting people bring dogs into stores is rather interesting, I am not sure if I have gotten used to it yet. I am always slightly alarmed when a huge furry creature brushes past my leg and sniffs at random corners of shelf displays.

We spent almost a whole day shopping! and left Roermond by evening. Those days, the weather was still warm and watching sunset was lovely.
