home is where the heart is

As much fun as it is to be here in Europe and travel, I can't help but miss home! On our way home from school this morning, Ling and I were listing all the ways in which we miss Singapore. The hot weather, the bright bright sunshine; swimming, jogging without freezing; trees - all the ones outside our window have gone naked and bare; and FOOD FOOD FOOD. We can take care of ourselves and hostel is comfy and class is all right, but nothing beats good old cheap local food! Sure, the cereal, pasta, cheese here is much better - but how much cheese and cream can you actually take? The European variety of food is very limited as well, mainly sandwiches and pasta dishes and steaks and sausages. I miss laksa, tom yum, char kway teow, sushi!

We had dinner at a (once Singaporean) Dutch family's house on Sunday. The father-in-law used to be a chef in Singapore, so food was FANTASTIC. There were very simple dishes such as prawn omelette, curry chicken and stir-fried veggies, but it tasted exactly like restaurant fare, complete with "wok" taste! Aaaaah. The couple was very nice and interesting, and we had a great evening! Although the family has been living in the Netherlands for over 24 years, the house looked totally Singaporean, with Fortune Cats and crystal ornaments and ancestral photos on the wall. Relaxing in the living room with Nintendo wii, I couldn't help but feel completely at home!
